This exhibition will be presented alongside America\, Unfinished?!\, a major exhibition exploring contemporary American identity through the work of artists examining the unfinished narratives and evolving stories that continue to shape our nation. \nOriginally premiered in Groton\, Connecticut\, Ascending: The Liberation of Native Art now arrives on the land presently known as Providence. The exhibition continues to explore long-standing misconceptions while celebrating the vitality\, diversity\, and innovation of  Native creative practice. \nThrough a broad scope of mediums including painting\, sculpture\, clay\, photography\, beadwork\, and wampum\, the installation reclaims space for Native perspectives and invites audiences to engage with Native art on its own terms. \nTogether\, America\, Unfinished?! and Ascending: The Liberation of Native Art create an interesting dual show about history\, identity\, belonging\, and the ongoing work of redefining the American narrative.

DESCRIPTION:Lecture: In Our Own Words: Museums\, Memory\, and Native Expression\nGuest Keynote Speaker: Felicia Bartley (Pueblo of Isleta) \nMarch 27\, 2026 Approximately 5:30pm \n\nFree to the public\, this lecture will explore the social shift of decolonization in museums and the expansion of Native expression. Felicia Bartley (MA\, Public Humanities) will discuss how Native North American communities have self-determined diverse language and cultural practices for thousands of years. Through the lens of her experience as a Tiwa woman and Curator of Native American and Indigenous History\, Felicia will provide an overview on the harmful museum practices that have reaffirmed non-Native assumptions of indigeneity\, censorship of Native voices and the attempt to undermine our political and cultural sovereignty. \nThis discussion will reorient cultural awareness\, inclusivity\, and expand the view of Native identity—past and present\, while highlighting Native art as a living\, evolving form of storytelling. \nThe public lecture will be held at UConn’s Avery Point campus\, a discussion on ‘In Our Own Words: Museums\, Memory and Native Expression’\, Free and open to the public limited seating available.
