July 2 – August 30, 2026
WaterFire Arts Center | Main Hall + Gallery
Providence, Rhode Island
Opening Reception Thursday, July 2nd 6:00pm-9pm.

Ascending: The Liberation of Native Art, presented by Cedar Nation and sponsored by the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center. This exhibition will be presented alongside America, Unfinished?!, a major exhibition exploring contemporary American identity through the work of artists examining the unfinished narratives and evolving stories that continue to shape our nation.
Originally premiered in Groton, Connecticut, Ascending: The Liberation of Native Art now arrives on the land presently known as Providence. The exhibition continues to explore long-standing misconceptions while celebrating the vitality, diversity, and innovation of Native creative practice.
Through a broad scope of mediums including painting, sculpture, clay, photography, beadwork, and wampum, the installation reclaims space for Native perspectives and invites audiences to engage with Native art on its own terms.
Together, America, Unfinished?! and Ascending: The Liberation of Native Art create an interesting dual show about history, identity, belonging, and the ongoing work of redefining the American narrative.
